Bon Iver – Blood Bank EP

Posted in music by arcanedufresne on August 11, 2009

Two Mondays in a row I have forgot to publish the previously written post for Music Monday.

I don’t know if it can be attributed to the recent humidity/heat wave with summer finally hitting, or maybe all the fine fall clothing lines I have been peeping, or maybe it’s subconscious manifestation of my natural preference for fall and winter, but whatever it may be, I long for cooler temps already. With that being said I am going to another throwback in the form of Bon Iver. Justin Vernon blew up last year with Bon Iver and For Emma, Forever Ago, and justifiably so. I’m not sure if as many people found their way to the Blood Bank EP that he released, fittingly, last January.

Listen to Woods

Bon Iver has managed to whittle four more stories of haunting minimalism out of the Wisconsin woodlands. Each track is it’s own respective and autonomous gem and the EP starts with the track sharing the same name as the album, Blood Bank, and it’s best track as well. The steel guitaring on Beach Baby will echo in your mind after it’s end, and Babys sounds of a journey through the snowy countryside. Despite the rise of the auto-tune in the hip-hop/R&B genre, it hardly seems contrived on Woods, but rather adds to the spectral feel of the offering.

The production value is significantly upped on this second release, but not to the point where it has affected one of Bon Iver’s most enjoyable qualities, it’s bare-bones lo-fi story telling. Blood Bank clocks in at around 17 total minutes, which may be the only plausible complaint, as it leaves you yearning for more. It’s just enough to hold you over until the winter and the anticipation of the sophomore release from Bon Iver.
