Yo Joe!

Came home to the mail today to find a package from a mystery locale, only to open it up and find this:

I used to have the most absolute collection of G.I. Joe’s. We saved all the profile cards and even set them all up in a Joe v. Cobra battle with all the vehicles I had, took pictures and documented each person as well as what weapons, animals and other accessories they came with all on yellow legal pad. I lost them all somehow in a move when I was younger (I still maintain my neighbor stole them) and my brother just took me on a journey back in time. What a fucking awesome brother. Thanks man.

Rubies – Explode From the Center

Posted in music by arcanedufresne on October 19, 2009

Despite the sickness, Music Monday will prevail.

When I think about Rubies’ Explode From the Center, I hear a mellow 70’s intimate, disco feel intertwined with an air of sophistication that I feel wouldn’t be appreciated if I were any younger (as if I’m so mature and adult-like right now) Explode is a lost LP from your Mom’s collection that fell out of the crate and somehow landed in your stack of new releases and tricked you into loving it. Tracks laden with funky bass and synthesizers (I Feel Electric), sultry guitar riffs (Room Without a Key) and smoky vocals (Too Bright) intermingle across the entire album while remaining simple as you soak them in. A good listen if you’re coming off a sickness (like me, which led me to this review finally) Explode from the Center is soft, enticing, intimate and makes you want to get your mojo back; good for an impromptu late-night bedroom dance party. One complaint would be at only nine songs, it falls on the short side of satisfying but other than that issue, a stellar effort from Rubies.

Did you just call me Coltrane?

How could I say no to purchasing this John Coltrane 5-disc box set, Side Steps, for only 11$? I couldn’t. Unfortunately, it is on backorder but should arrive in time to be enjoyed with a snifter of whiskey and a winter night in the near future.

The Hiatus

Posted in movies by arcanedufresne on October 19, 2009

Trying to find the positive in things, I did manage to watch a gaggle of movies during my illness downtime and I pull off that worn-down, too tired and sick to shower or take care of myself in general look real well:

The movies I watched were as follows:

  • Coraline (twice)
  • Hellboy
  • Hellboy 2: The Golden Army
  • The Darjeeling Limited
  • The Life Aquatic
  • Trading Places
  • Stranger Than Fiction
  • I Love You, Man
  • The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
  • Synecdoche, New York
  • 12 Monkeys
  • G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra
  • Transformers 2

Transformers 2 was better than everyone said and G.I. Joe was just as bad as everyone said, if not worse.  I also caught up on two episodes of Curb (hilarious), the season finale of Entourage (boring, end this show already so I can stop wasting my life watching it) and for some reason two episodes of Psych that Scott was watching.
