Washed Out – Life of Leisure EP
An aptly titled musical offering, you can hear the sun-bleached, surf-soaked, radiation-treated decay in every note and beat of this six song EP from Washed Out. Earnest Greene is the man behind the music and Life of Leisure is an engaging combination of driving synth rhythms, crackling beats and sprinkled with his spacey vocals. Hold Out boasts an intro that sounds like the opening credit montage from a cult 80’s pop classic that was recorded on a VCR and rewatched until the film’s tape started to wear thin, then subsequently layer Greene’s vocals, which were recorded on an orbiting space shuttle, over the instrumentation. It all comes together on the EP’s best track, Feel It All Around, is a hazy, dreamy sunset that meanders down until it’s gone below the horizon as you’re left coming down from the punch-drunk high.
There is a plethora of lo-fi, throwback rock and synthpop permeating the world right now and Washed Out is at the top of the class. The EP format is perfect because it leaves you longing for more and it’s impossible start all over again. Check out the full length High Times as well for more pleasure.
